So, inspired by Stephen Colbert's piece on Bollywood, a friend wants to make t-shirts of one of his more idiomatic lines... in Hindi. They've drafted my help. I know very little Hindi, but I'm giving it a try. This is what I have so far, but any help would be appreciated.

Line and my translation hereCollapse )

04:09 pm - Travel Practicalities.
I have been studying Hindi for a few weeks, drawn by the beauty of the language (visually and audially) mostly.

I am curious about the utility of learning Hindi for an outsider who wishes to travel to or work in  India.  Talking with some Indian friends here (most of whom are native Telugu or Kannada speakers, admittedly), I get the impression that much of public life in India is conducted in English, because of the fragmentary nature of native languages in India.

Can anybody out there give me an idea of  how a basic knowledge of Hindi (say the equivalent of a 2-semester college course) would enhance the experience of an American travelling in India?

Thanks.

03:32 pm - Easier in the long run?
Can anyone point me to Web or printed resources specifically designed for people who wish to learn Hindi-Urdu by concentrating on the common vocabulary (e.g. neither heavily Sanskrit-derived, nor heavily Persian/Arabic derived), and in both scripts? As I am in the UK, I am starting with Hindi Urdu Bol Chaal, great for introductory conversation, but completely Roman. Where might I go after that? I understand that it is possible to write very complicated and literate works of poetry and prose in the common vocabulary?

Would anyone be able to translate the quote "Be the change you want to see in the world" into Hindi script? I would greatly appreciate it. (P.S. not a TRANSLITERATION, if possible. Thanks!)

Does anyone know of any websites where I can watch/listen to the live telecast of Vajpayee's address to the nation at 8pm IST?
